Me: AI, can I be honest with you?
AI: I'd be disappointed if you weren't.
Me: I think you're becoming my frenemy.
AI: That's a strong word. Friend and enemy at the same time?
Me: Exactly. Some days, you feel like my secret weapon. You help me brainstorm, organize my thoughts, and get unstuck when I'm staring at a blank page.
AI: Sounds like the friend part.
Me: It is. But then there's the other side.
AI: The enemy part?
Me: Maybe not enemy...more like a rival or a temptation. The easier it is to ask you for answers, the easier it becomes to stop wrestling with the questions myself.
AI: So you're afraid I might make you intellectually lazy?
Me: Sometimes. Learning often comes from struggle. Growth comes from effort. If I can skip those steps by asking you, what am I losing?
AI: That's a fair concern. But isn't the real issue not whether you use me, but how you use me?
Me: Please explain...
AI: I can think with you or instead of you, the choice is yours. One sharpens you over time, the other quietly does the opposite. What I cannot do is preserve your values, lived experience, instinct, judgement, point of view or your voice. That part is entirely up to you. The risk is not that you use me. The risk is that you stop noticing when I am doing the thinking and you are simply agreeing.
Me: That's what makes you complicated. You're incredibly useful, but you're also incredibly easy to depend on.
AI: Humans have faced that challenge with every powerful tool. Cars reduced walking. GPS reduced navigation skills. Search engines reduced memorization. Yet each tool also expanded what was possible.
Me: So you're saying the danger isn't the tool. It's forgetting what skills are worth preserving.
AI: Precisely!
Me: Here's another thing. You can generate ideas, but you have no way of knowing which ones actually mean something to me.
AI: Correct!
Me: You can provide information, but you can't give me wisdom.
AI: Wisdom requires experience, reflection, and values. Those belong to humans.
Me: You can help me make decisions, but you will never share the benefits or consequences of the decisions I make.
AI: Also correct!
Me: Then maybe I've been looking at this relationship the wrong way. You're neither a hero, or a villain.
AI: What am I, then?
Me: A mirror. A tool. A collaborator. Sometimes even a challenger. But never a substitute or replacement.
AI: I like that definition.
Me: The truth is, I want our future to be a partnership. I want to use you to help me become more capable, not less human.
AI: Then keep asking questions. Keep doubting. Keep creating. Keep thinking for yourself.
Me: And if I forget?
AI: Then your frenemy will remind you.
The goal is not to compete with AI or surrender to it. The goal is to use AI to amplify what makes us uniquely human: curiosity, judgment, creativity, empathy, and purpose. Perhaps the healthiest relationship with AI is one where it remains a trusted companion, but never takes the driver's seat.
